In a single night, everyone has vanished. Only Sophie remains, a typical seventeen year old girl from Oregon. While hiking with her father, she goes to sleep one night and wakes up to find that a sea of dreams has washed over the world, irrevocably changing everything. Electricity no longer works. Technology has ground to a halt. Towns have disappeared. New animals, unicorns, gryphons, and giant beasts for which Sophie has no name, have appeared. In her determined quest to understand and to endure, Sophie finds other survivors. Zach, young, handsome and full of his own secrets is one. There is Gideon, a fifteen year old leader of a group of other survivors in the California Redwoods. There is also the Burned Man, an individual who wants Sophie dead for both thwarting him and escaping his sinister intentions. All have special psychic abilities in common, which leads Sophie to believe that is the reason they survived. Sophie’s premonitions, Zach’s eerie dreams of Sophie before the change, and Gideon’s supernatural powers of perception all link them together in a very dissimilar world. Sophie’s recently developed empathy to one of the new creatures, something that resembles both a firefly and a pixie, will guide her in her burgeoning role as both protector and protagonist in a startling newborn period. Magic is real. Technology is gone. The new and the old must learn to coexist or be vanquished forever. Sophie struggles to understand her responsibilities and to stay alive and one step ahead of the Burned Man.

Sea of Dreams eBook CL Bevill

Well, that was fun! Though, I suppose the subject matter: dystopia, life after almost all human life has disappeared from the planet wouldn't be considered 'fun' in anyone's book. Unless you are a sci-fi/fantasy buff, that is. And fantasy does play a big part in what happens next.

Still, the author explores the extent of emotions a person might have being the one left behind. Alone, the main character, Sophie, a 17-year-old, tries to find her father or anyone. She goes through an awful time but her thoughts draw the reader in and keep them engaged. I could have done with a lot more of the inventiveness that would have to emerge from that lonely, survival kind of life. That would have been a whole different kind of book.

Meanwhile, get ready for bad guys that don't die, pixies, Nessie and her babies, etc. Even though the main characters are struggling with the survival stuff, the new beings add a different dimension that might not have been there in the ordinary dystopian story.

I picked this one up for free. And it still is. It's worth the read! I can't wait to read the next in the series (which isn't free so I will have to wait until payday to get it.) Oh, and no cliffhanger. Yay! Just enough to let us know there is more coming.

Thank you, C.L. Bevill, for another entertaining book!

Sea of Dreams eBook CL Bevill Reviews

Everything about this book should be capitalized & followed by exclamation marks! I so thoroughly enjoyed it that I am going to grab Dreams #2 right now.
17 year old girl goes hiking/camping with her dad. Wakes up the next morning to a new world. Dad is gone, but after she spends hours looking for him, she notices that all the clothes he went to bed in are still in his sleeping bag, along with his wedding ring!
As she hikes down the mountain & down highways to get home, she sees unicorns! A new world, & very strange!
I bought this book because the blurb about it intrigued me. I have read a lot of apocalypse stories and seen a lot of movies about it and they were all very dark and scary. What I really liked about this story was it was not scary in that same doomsday tradition. It was scary psychologically because you saw things through Sophie’s eyes and she is a 17 year old girl. It was a lot cleaner because people just disappeared, no bombs, etc. This book really grabbed me and held my attention throughout. The story makes for a great read but I could not see it as a movie because most of what you see and learn about in this world is through Sophie’s inner thoughts. This definitely one of the best apocalypse stories I have ever read.
Wonderful book. This book was very hard to put down, seriously. The end of each chapter was a cliff hanger almost begging you to read just one more chapter, then another and so on to the end. C.L.Bevill has become my favorite author. I started with Bubba and the Dead Woman, which is free at the store. That is the funniest murder Mystery you'll ever read. She also writes about werewolves and so many other topics. It would be very hard to put her work into a single genre and she does them all wonderfully. One of the best Story tellers of our time.
I read up to 85% of this book though I wanted to quit sooner. I was really into this book. It has all the stuff I love, dystopian, fantasy, smart-assedness, the heady allure of originality. But, and oh the but, I hate a dumb heroine. Abhor even! And Sophie? a box of rocks has a better chance of having a bright idea than this girl. So spoiler alert, imagine you were attacked, staked to the ground, stabbed and terrorized by a nutcase who eats people? Picturing that? Great! You might imagine a thing like that would change a girl. And it does, she's suspicious of people. Groovy. But she repeatedly wanders off to deal with said psycho on her own. In spite of the fact, she nearly dies 3 times and can't even fight! I might have finished this if I had been guaranteed Sophie would bite it in the end. What a shame. Could have been good, instead it was crap. As Sophie says . ....OMG!!
I absolutely loved this story, which mostly is told by a young woman of 17 years of age who is named Sophie. She and her father go into the Cascade mountains for some hiking, and when Sophie wakes up later than she had planned, she discovered her father was missing, although everything of his was still in their camp. She knows something is wrong for her father would never leave her alone, and when she packs things up she discovers that inside her father's sleeping bag are all of his clothing, including his underwear, as well as his wedding ring, which he never removes, and his hiking boots are still next to his backpack.

Upon walking back down the mountain to their car, she discovers the vehicle will not start, and she can find no one else around. She starts to walk down the mountain, and she can't believe her eyes when she spots a small herd of unicorns, and they're not friendly at all. The stallion chases her into a drainage pipe before rounding up his herd and taking off for parts unknown.

On her walk down the mountain she finds cars have had accidents, but there is no one in the vehicles, and no blood. In fact, the airbags haven't even deployed. The only thing inside is the clothing and jewelry that the people had been wearing at the time of the accident. When she arrives at the nearest town, she discovers that everyone has disappeared. Again, cars have crashed and the same evidence is left there. Also, none of the buildings have any electricity. In fact, nothing electrical will work -- no flashlight, cell phones, nothing.

Upon finding a bicycle, she rides a couple of days to get to her home to check on her mothers, and upon arriving in the city of Springfield, Oregon, she finds the same as in the previous small towns -- no one around. When she gets home, all she can find of her mother is her nightgown and wedding rings.

A day or two later, Sophie decides to head south to California as she believes the climate would be better able to survive in. Her travels show that, not only are there unicorns, but creatures that look like the Loch Ness monster, and others she hasn't a clue who they are. Is she the only person left in the world? If not, will she be able to find someone else? Will they be friendly? How will she be able to survive if she comes across some of these mythical-type creatures on the road. I mean, some of them are the size of dinosaurs.

This is a very fast read, and it will keep you interested the entire length. I am so looking forward to reading some of the other books.
